Choosing the Right Cosmetic Procedures

3 Common Questions About What Happens After Liposuction Treatment

If you have a stubborn area of fat on your body, whether it is on your neck, your stomach, or elsewhere, liposuction is an excellent solution. During this cosmetic procedure, a thin vacuum-like device is inserted through the skin and the fatty tissue is sucked out. The procedure basically eliminates the excess fat in the area so there are quick and noticeable results. However, what happens after the procedure is complete? There are a handful of questions that prospective liposuction patients tend to have about the aftermath of treatment. Take a look at a few of those questions and the answers you should know if you are considering liposuction for yourself.

Will the fat return after liposuction treatments are complete?

It is always possible for the fatty tissue to regrow once it has been removed via liposuction. Even though the fat may return more slowly, it is always a possibility. It is for this reason that your doctor may recommend specific types of exercise or diet changes to prevent the regrowth of fat tissue. Fat is really prone to regrowing in certain areas, such as around the abdomen and buttocks where fat naturally accumulates in the body. So while you may see some fatty tissue redevelop in certain liposuctioned areas, other areas may see a more rapid development.

Why do you have to wear snug-fitting bands or wraps after liposuction?

Once your treatment is complete, your doctor may send you home with a tight-fitting wrap or garment to compress the area that was treated. There are a few reasons why this is a typical part of treatment for certain areas of fatty tissue removal. The snug-fitting garment will help keep swelling to a minimum, but it will also help to compress any remaining fatty tissue that has been disrupted through the treatment process so it doesn't cause a lumpy or uneven appearance under the skin.

Will you be in pain after the liposuction treatment?

Pain levels can vary depending on how much fatty tissue is removed, where the fatty tissue was removed, and even how healthy you are in general. You should expect to be sore for a bit while your body recovers, but your pain should not be severely limiting. You will see some swelling and bruising almost immediately after the procedure is finished. Your doctor may recommend you take an over-the-counter pain reliever for the soreness until you heal.
